Founded in 1852, Grove City is located in Franklin County. Considered a suburb of Columbus, the city is home to more than 35,000 residents. The name is derived from the abundance of dogwood, maple, walnut, beech, and other types of trees that were found in abundance by the first settlers in the area.
The first person to build a home in the area was European businessman William Grant. Coming across the Scioto Valley during his travels in 1803, he ended up purchasing the tracts of land that would eventually become Grove City. He and his wife Catherine lived on the property for a number of years.
William F. Breck is credited as being the official founder of Grove City. Purchasing acreage from the son of William Grant, Breck envisioned a community that would include churches, schools, businesses, and homes, with farms surrounding the village. The community was incorporated as a village in 1866, and then as a city in 1959.
The close proximity to Columbus allows Grove City residents access to a number of options for entertainment and cuisine. It’s also home to two structures that are found on the National Register of Historic Places: Gantz Homestead, and the A.G. Grant Homestead.
