Located in Franklin County, Hilliard is home to more than 36,000 residents. It’s considered a suburb of Columbus and part of the Norwich Township. The city’s history traces back to the 1852 purchase of ten acres by John Reed Hilliard.

Originally known as Hilliard’s Station, the community became an important stop along the Piqua and Indiana Railroad line. The platting done in 1853 ensured that the station and the surrounding area would remain the town center for more than a century.

Incorporation as a village took place in 1869, with a population of around 280. Schools, businesses, a fire station, and other establishments helped the village to grow in the decades to come. In 1960, the village achieved enough population to be designated as a city.

High school sports programs have led to Hilliard being home to teams who have consistently won state championships in football, soccer, cross country, and several other sports.
