Located in Rowan County, China Grove is home to more than 4,400 residents. Found north of Landis and south of Salisbury, China Grove holds the distinction of being one of the first towns in the USA to receive rural free mail delivery service from the US Post Office.
The first record of settlers in the area indicate that the first cabins appeared around 1710. Information about a settlement known as Savits Mill indicate that it was the first permanent settlement. In 1846, the community was renamed Lutherville. At the time of incorporation in 1849, the town approved the name of China Grove.
The name for the town is derived from the proliferation of chinaberry trees that are native to the area. Specifically, a grove of trees found next to the original train depot provided the inspiration. While the grove was mostly gone by the 1920s and the depot was demolished in 1974, the trees are still found in many yards and in the surrounding countryside.
As recently as 2016, China Grove was named one of the 20 safest places to live in North Carolina. Five community parks serve the town, along with a number of locally owned retail businesses and several restaurants.
