Considered a major suburb within the Charlotte metropolitan area, Cornelius is found along the border of Lake Norman in the northern potion of Mecklenburg County. Currently, the town is home to more than 30,000 residents.
Founded in 1893, the town would not be incorporated until 1905. The origins of the town are based on what is usually called a cotton weighing controversy. Specifically, the owners of two different cotton mills disagreed about the appointment of a town cotton weigher. After legislation and a vote led to hiring a weigher, one of the owners moved the operation out of the town of Davidson and into unincorporated territory that would eventually become Cornelius.
While cotton and textiles remained important to the life of the town well into the middle of the 20th century, another event also altered the course of the community. The creation of a dam on the Catawba River in 1963 made it possible to create Lake Norman. That in turn created a source of hydroelectric power that made it possible to expand recreational operations and support a larger population. The fact that the new lake provided Cornelius with roughly 70 miles of lakeside property made it an even more attractive place to live.
