With town limits that are found in both Mecklenburg and Iredell Counties, Davidson is home to ore than 13,000 people. Found on the banks of Lake Norman, the town is considered a suburb within the Charlotte metropolitan area. The origins of the town begin with the establishment of Presbyterian Davidson College in 1837. Named after Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, the land for the college proper came from Davidson’s personal estate.
The presence of the college drew more people to the area. By the latter part of the 19th century, Davidson was a thriving town with cotton and textiles providing a number of jobs in addition to the college. The arrival of the railroad helps to bolster interest in the town and brought more people to the area.
Today, restaurants and specialty shops are readily found in the downtown area. Recreation around Lake Norman brings a number of people to the area on weekends. Major corporations like Trane / Ingersoll Rand and MSC Industrial Direct maintain a heavy presence in the area, supplying many of the local jobs.
