Located in Hennepin County, Long Lake is a city that’s home to more than 1,700 residents. With a history dating back to 1855, it’s among the oldest settled municipalities in the area.
While one group of settlers visited the area in the spring of 1855, they chose to cross the lake and settle on the opposite side. Another group arrived in May, 1855 and chose to settle what’s now Long Lake. First known as Cumberland Town, the settlement soon included a sawmill, a school house, and a general store. By 1856, the first post office was established.
Significant growth took place around the turn of the 20th century, when the Minnesota Fruit Growers Association was established in Long Lake. In the years following, several local communities were annexed as the city established its first sewage system.
Today, history is a big part of Long Lakes tourism efforts. That includes preserving structures from decades past, providing several parks that include recreational facilities, and even taking in some bird watching.
