With a population of just over 9,000, Mound is located in the western portion of Hennepin County. Considered the birthplace of the Tonka truck, the city was once the headquarters of Tonka Toys. Minneapolis is 22 miles from Mound, making it easy for residents to commute when and as the need arises.
Mound was officially incorporated in 1912. The city’s name is derived from the presence of First People burial mounds that are common in the area. The exact origins of the mounds are unknown, since they were present before the Dakota Indians first settled in the area.
