Found along the north shore of Lake Minnetonka in Hennepin County, Orono is home to more than 7,500 people. Originally part of Excelsior Township, Orono became part of the Medina Township in 1868. Orono did not become a separate community until 1899. Incorporation would not take place until 1955.
The inspiration for the city’s name came from an early resident who had relocated from the east. George A. Brackett, who had grown up in Orono, Maine, suggested the name for the new community. It remained the choice of the citizenry when the city was finally incorporated.
Visitors to Orono will want to take advantage of the opportunity to tour the local breweries. Two that are of special interest are the Orono Brewing Company and the Black Bear Brewery. The Orono Farmer’s Market features some of the best produce to be found in the region, along with prepared fruit pies, cakes, and home-canned vegetables and fruits. Jams and jellies are also readily available at the market.
