As one of the relatively new cities in Hennepin County, Shorewood was officially incorporated in 1956. At present, the city is home to more than 7,300 people. As recently as 2016, Shorewood was reported to be the single wealthiest city in Minnesota.
Prior to its incorporation, Shorewood was part of a wider community known as the Excelsior Township. Other communities were also included in the Township, such as Deephaven, Tonka Bay, and Excelsior.
