Allendale is a borough in Bergen County, and is home to more than 6,700 residents. Formed in 1894, the name was inspired by Joseph Warner Allen, who was a surveyor for the Erie Railroad. The formation of Allendale came during a period when a phenomenon known as “Boroughitis” was leading to the creation of a number of new boroughs by consolidating various incorporated and unincorporated communities.
Allendale itself was created from portions of the then-existing Franklin Township, the Hohokus Township, and the Orvile Township. It stands as one of 26 boroughs that were created during 1894 alone.
The borough is home to what’s known as the Celery Farm, a preserve that houses hundreds of different types of animals. Wildlife like deer, rabbits, fox and rabbits are found there. The Farm is also home to a number of turtles and frogs. Exotic birds are also located in the preserve.
Allendale offers a number of recreational activities for residents and visitors. Crestwood Park covers more than 70 acres and includes a man-made lake that’s suitable for swimming and other water sports. Beaches were created along the waterfront, creating ideal places to enjoy the sun. The park also offers four tennis courts, two fields suitable for football and soccer games, and three fields that are used for softball and baseball games.
