Alpine is a borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Currently, more than 1,800 residents make their homes there. The borough offers easy access to midtown Manhattan, which is only 15 miles away.
While the first settlers to the area date back to the early 18th century, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that the area began to be viewed as suitable for resorts and summer homes. Prior to that time, the most stable settlement was known as Skunk Hollow, and was primarily a community established for and ran by former slaves. Joseph Lamb, founder of J. & R. Lamb Studios, is credited with building the first lodge or summer home in the area around 1860.
More homes would follow, with some industries moving into the area. Notably, a cereal mill was established just a few miles away from where the summer homes were being constructed. For a time in the early 20th century, a number of silent films were made in the area. Film making waned as movie production began shift to California.
Today, Alpine is still primarily known as a place for summer retreats, and for the Palisades Interstate Park. The park runs the entire length of Alpine as well as along the Hudson River.
