Located in Bergen County, Mahwah is the largest municipality by geographic area in the county. Population wise, the city is home to more than 26,000 residents. The name of the city is inspired by the The Lenape and other First People who occupied the area, and is translated as “the meeting place.”
Mahwah has its beginnings in events that took place in 1894. At that time, a number of boroughs were created from sections of existing communities. One of those boroughs was the Hohokus Township. When that township was dissolved in 1944, the Mahwah Township was formed using sections of the disbanded borough.
For a quarter-century, Mahwah was the site of the A&P Tennis Classic. The Ford Motor Company operated an assembly plant in the area for more than 26 years, producing 6 million vehicles before the plant closed in 1980.
The municipality is home to a number of state and county parks. Among them are the Campgaw Mountain Reservation, Darlington County Park and Ramapo Valley County Reservation.
