Found in Bergen County, Paramus is a borough in Bergen County that was incorporated in 1922. Considered a suburb of New York City, the borough is roughly 20 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan. With a population of more than 26,000 resident, Paramus has been characterized as being a “quintessentially suburban” community by the Wall Street Journal.
The unique name for the borough is said to be derived from a combination of words used by First Peoples who once populated the area. Those words are roughly translated as “land of the turkeys” and “pleasant stream”.
Known as a shopping mecca that takes in more than $6 billion in annual retail sales, Paramus also has some of the most stringent blue laws found in the United States. The majority of white-collar and retail operations are not allowed to open on Sundays. Exceptions include gas stations, grocers, and restaurants.
One of the first drive-in theaters was based in Paramus, and remained in operation until 1987. Movie houses, community theaters, and concert venues are found throughout the area. The borough is also home to two county parks, one of which operates a zoo.
