Ramsey is a borough found in Bergen County. Currently, it’s home to more than 14,800 residents. Considered a suburb of New York City, Ramsey is located 26 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan.
The borough came into being due to an act by the state legislature in 1908. At that time, portions of Hohokus Township were used to create Ramsey. In 1921, land from Waldick was annexed. Later in the decade, a portion of Ramsey was ceded to Saddle River.
Ramsey is named for Peter J. Ramsey, who was a landowner in the 19th century. He donated a parcel of land to be used for the construction of a railroad station that would be known in Ramsey’s for decades after his death. A petition to the state legislature requested that the new borough carry his name.
Prior to the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Ramsey was home to a historic two-screen movie house that had been in operation for decades. The theater was originally shut down in 2013, but was reopened in 2014 and remained so until March of 2020. The fate of the theater is on hold pending the end of the pandemic.
