LIME Painting: A Home Service Franchise in the High End Painting & Contracting Industry
LIME specializes in working on custom high-end luxury homes and properties. LIME is also a values driven franchise co.
The Superman Model
The traditional painting model that serves the high-end market is inconsistent and unreliable due to the highly fragmented nature of the industry. Each market has different business models, and, as a result, customers receive varying ranges of customer service and expertise. The most common business model is the one in which just one guy wears all the hats—from estimating, to scheduling, to sales, staffing, and painting. This business model is known by LIME as the Superman Model. The Superman Model is great for Superman, as he has low overhead. He owns one van, a set of ladders, paint equipment, and hires friends and family to help.
However, the downside of the Superman Model is that the season is long and many variables—such as an employee who quits or who is ill or a customer who doubles the existing scope of work—can influence the model. In this example, consumers are left to the mercy of the painters’ schedule—a schedule that often gets pushed further and further out. In addition, projects typically go very slowly due to the limited crew size, especially since often the only experienced painter is Superman. The outcome is decreased morale, a shrinking crew size, delayed scheduling, and so on. In the end, the person who loses is the customer. The reality is that a team with many specialized roles creates consistency and reliability. A team is what defines a successful service provider in business.
Traditional National Brands
Another business model in the marketplace is the national brand model. In general, national brands are dependent on the quality of the operator who owns or manages the location within the territory. Some operators can develop the ability to service high-end homes, but it is rare and not the norm, as that is not the focus of national brands within the painting sector. National brands are not specialists of custom high-end properties. In fact, they are general market providers and have a specialty in servicing paint only. For a custom high-end property, a unique set of skills is required to properly assess, advise, and audit the scope of work recommended.
