Located in Utah County, Highland is a city that’s home to more than 8,000 people. The area was first settled in the 1970s, primarily by Scottish converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The name came about because of the settlers’ conviction that the area reminded them of the Highlands areas of Scotland.

John Poole is credited with building the first home in the area in 1875. The area remained unincorporated until 1977, when it officially became a city. In 1979, Highland was declared a city of the thirds class by way of a proclamation signed by then-Governor Scott Maheson.

The canyons and other natural attractions around Highland continue to bring people to the area. A number of state parks are within easy driving distance of the city. Mountain climbing and biking are common sports in the area. Skiing is also found near the city. Local museums preserve the city’s past, while some of the older local LDS meetinghouses and churches of other denominations also contribute to the Highland’s rich history.
