Located in the northern part of Fulton County, Alpharetta is considered part of the Atlanta Metro Area. The city was first established as the community of Milton in the 1830s. That changed in December, 1858, when the community was chartered as the city of Alpharetta.
The inspiration for the city’s name is said to come from a 19th century song, “The Blue Juniata.” The song mentions a Native American girl with the name of Alfarata. There are also those who claim the inspiration is derived from “alpha”, the first letter in the Greek alphabet.
Prior to 1931, Alpharetta served as the county seat of Milton County. At that time, Milton County was absorbed into Fulton County, allowing the county to avoid bankruptcy.
Alpharetta has enjoyed steady growth during the current century. At the time of the 2010 census, the city was home to just over 57,000 residents. By the time of the 2020 census, the population had grown to just under 66,000 residents.
