Located in Rowan County, Cleveland is a town that’s part of the Cleveland Township. More than 870 people make their homes in the town. Two stories circulate about how the town got it’s name. One attributes it as being named after the town of Cleveland in England. Another claims that the name is in honor of President Grover Cleveland, who is said to have visited the area during his presidential campaign.
With a history dating back to 1831, Cleveland has the distinction of being the only incorporated town in western Rowan County. First known as Rowan Mills, the presence of a post office and a flour mill paved the way for a line of the local railroad. The railroad station proper was known as Third Creek. When the town was incorporated in 1876, Third Creek was selected rather than Rowan Mills. In 1884, the townspeople voted to remain their community Cleveland.
Today, Cleveland has a number of historic structures found on the National Register of Historic Places. Horse and cattle farms are found throughout the area, along with some of the county’s most beautiful farmlands. Cleveland is also known for a selection of restaurants that provide everything from family style meals to upscale cuisine.
