Located in Lincoln County, Denver is an unincorporated community that’s home to more than 2,400 people. Once known as Dry Pond, the earliest settlers arrived in the middle of the 18th century. The name for the community was derived from a small pond that would dry up during the summer months and only return after the autumn rain.
As is true for many smaller North Carolina communities, what would become Denver had its beginnings as a religious community. Well into the 19th century, Scot-Irish Presbyterians chose to settle in the area. Some of the earliest members of the Methodist Episcopal Church also began to settle in the area during the latter part of the 19th century.
Grist mills and sawmills combined with farming provided much of the business in the young community. Cotton and textiles added to the mix later on. The completion of a railroad line further encouraged growth. The Methodists added the concept of the camp meeting to the local culture. Quickly becoming an ecumenical event, the meetings helped to broaden the community’s religious landscape.
The advent of Lake Norman increased access to power in several areas, including Denver. This helped the community to gain a reputation as a getaway for weekends and vacations. Along with water recreation, the community has also cultivated tourism that’s centered around properties that are included on the National Register of Historic Places.
