Located in Cabarrus County, Harrisburg is a suburb of Charlotte. Currently, the town is home to more than 16,500 residents. With a history dating back to the 18th century, the town enjoys a combination of industry, culture, and historic preservation that continue to attract attention from visitors.
There is evidence that the original name for the settlement was Query’s Quarters. In fact, there are references in the journals of George Washington that mention coming through the settlement in 1791 while traveling by stagecoach.
The inspiration for the current name comes from the family of Robert Harris. Securing land in the area as early as 1766, the family was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the community. The first station was dubbed Harris Depot. When the first post office was established in 1874, the community took on the name of Harrisburg.
Today, Harrisburg retains the close-knit community feel that was present when it was incorporated as a town in 1973. The railroad remains an important part of the town, along with the construction of state highways and interstates that are found nearby. Visitors can enjoy local historic sites, a number of locally owned restaurants, and shopping in the downtown and other areas of the town.
