Facts about Deephaven, MN

Located in Hennepin County, Deephaven is found along the banks of Lake Minnetonka. First settled in 1876, the community began with the construction of a summer home by St. Louis attorney Charles Gibson. It wasn’t long until he was promoting the area to others. Gibson was one of the major supporters of the first hotel in the area, the Hotel Saint Louis.

After the hotel’s construction in 1879, a connection to the Minneapolis and Saint Louis Railway made travel to the area easier. The result was more homes and the establishment of the Minnetonka Yacht Club. During the 1890s, a train depot was built and dubbed Deephaven. That became the name for the entire community.

After a brief period as a favored vacation destination, attendance at Lake Minnetonka began to decline. By 1907, the hotel was out of business and scheduled for demolition. While the community is now home to more than 3,500 residents, it has never regained any prominence as a summer venue.

One remaining point of interest is the Cottagewood General Store. Opened in 1895, it remains a focal point for the community and anyone who visits.
