Located nine miles west of Minneapolis, Minnetonka is home to almost 54,000 people. Cargill, the nation’s largest privately owned company, has its headquarters in the city. It’s also home to United Health Care, considered the largest publicly owned company in the United States.
While the first explorations in the area date back to the 1820s, it was not until 1861 that the first permanent European settlement was established, In that year, the Dakota First People sold the area where Minnetonka now stands in what’s known the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux. By 1857, census records indicate the presence of 41 households, with the majority of them identifying agriculture as their means of earning a living.
A number of historical structures are maintained and open to the public. Many of them are on the National Register of Historical Places. That includes the Minnetonka Town Hall, which was built in 1906.
Today, the city is home to a network of public and private schools. It also boasts a Class A baseball team known as the Minnetonka Millers. Using Veterans Field as a home base, the Millers have been Minnesota state champions in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
