Found along the order of Salt Lake and Utah counties, Draper has a population of more than 51,000 people. The latest population figures indicate significant growth since 1990, when the city was home to just over 7,000 residents.
Draper’s history is traced back to 1849 when Ebenezer Brown sought out a place for his cattle to graze. The following year, he relocated with his wife and family to build one of the first homes in the area. Initially, the area was known as Sivogah, after the First People word meaning willows. Within the next few years, the area became known as South Willow Creek.
The first post office was established in 1854 and was known as the Draperville post office. In later years, the name was shortened and adopted for the town as well as the post office.
During the middle of the 20th century, Draper had become known as the egg basket of Utah. This is due to the poultry industry gaining prominence along with farming and livestock supplying much of the work opportunities in the area. Those still thrive today, although the population boom of the late 20th and early 21st centuries has led to the presence of other major industries.
