Facts about Park City, Utah
Located in Summit County, Park City has a current population of more than 8,500 residents. The city owes it’s beginnings to soldiers based in Salt Lake City who branched out in hopes of finding silver mines in the area. For much of the first hundred years of the area’s history, mining was one of the primary industries.
First settled in 1868, Park City was in the perfect location to take advantage of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1870. The railroad brought more settlers into the area, and led to the expansion of mining operations. It also led to the establishment of farming and livestock production in the area.
The spurt of growth allowed for the incorporation of Park City in 1884. Before the decade was over the city would have a population of more than 5,000. While a fire in 1898 destroyed ¾ of the city, the effort to rebuild was complete in less than two years.
As mining declined in the mid-20th century and finally came to an end in the 1980s and 1990s, Park City began to focus more on tourism. The city capitalized on the presence of snow and aided in the establishment of multiple ski resorts. The city is now a destination for those seeking long ski weekends as well as those who visit the area to ski for a day.
