Salt Lake City, found in Salt Lake County, is the oldest American settlement in Utah. Founded in 1847 by the portion of Latter-day Saints who supported Brigham Young as the rightful successor to Joseph Smith, Jr., the establishment of the city along the Great Salt Lake marked the end of a long and dangerous trek from the state of Illinois. Today, Salt Lake City is the headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is home to just under 200,000 residents. The Greater Salt Lake Valley has an estimated population of more than 1.2 million people.
Immigration made possible by the Church’s Perpetual Immigration Fund allowed new converts to enter the United States and migrate to the Salt Lake Valley. The fund remained intact for decades before it was discontinued. In the meantime, the Salt Lake Valley developed into a strong economy supported by farming, livestock, and industries supporting agricultural operations. In more recent years, tourism has grown, especially in the areas of skiing and other forms of outdoor recreation.
The city was the site for the 2002 Winter Olympics. In more recent years, Salt Lake City has hosted the US Volleyball Association Convention in 2005, the Deaflympics in 2007, and the 2007 convention of Rotary International. The semi-annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to attract large numbers to the area during April and October of each year.
