LIME was contacted by Studio Sven to apply Venetian Plaster to a kitchen in this beautiful condo at the intersections of Old Town, Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park. Venetian Plaster is a labor intensive process where the plaster is applied by trowel and then burnished to a shine using a combination of trowel and sanding with grits from 300 to 5000.
This project was even more challenging than most given the high ceiling over the top of a kitchen island, and the numerous corners that needed to be wrapped in the bar niche. Thankfully, our skilled artisans were up to the task even if it took longer than planned.
After prepping the area, we started by applying a base coat of regular plaster to create a smooth profile for the Venetian. The top coats of Venetian were tinted to match Benjamin Moore’s Intercoastal Green. Each coat of Venetian was applied by trowel. The layering of the plaster is what creates the movement and marbling of the finished product.
After the Venetian is applied, it must be burnished using a combination of trowel and sand paper of varying grits up to 5000. The process of burnishing both smooths the plaster, and the heat added in the process gives it the finished shine. The combination of the chandelier and the finished ceiling was gorgeous and something photos can only begin to capture.
