Found in Fremont County, Canon City is the county seat and the largest municipality within the county. Currently, more than 17,000 residents make their home in the city. It’s organized as a home rule municipality.
The city’s history dates back to 1858, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. At that time, the area was platted with streets and other elements. The first building in what would become Canon City was finished in 1860. The goal was to establish a commercial center to serve local miners and others who settled in the area.
Oil was also found in the city in 1862. That led to the establishment of the first commercial oil fields west of the Mississippi River. Oil from the area provided the main supply of petroleum products to the Denver area for decades.
In recent years, Canon City has focused on historic preservation and maintains a number of tourist attractions, In 1983, the Downtown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
