Located in El Paso County, Fountain is home to just under 30,000 people. The city is an easy drive to Colorado Springs, with only ten miles involved. This has made Fountain an attractive place for those working in the larger city to live.
The city came into existence in 1859, and originally served as a shipping center and railroad station. Much of the support was for local ranchers and farmers, although there were some miners in the area. For most of the 19th century, Fountain was known as Fountain Creek.
The community was first incorporated in 1900. One of the highlights and major attractions of the city today is the presence of the Pikes Peak International Raceway. The city also maintains a number of historic sites that tell more about the history of the area.
During the 20th century, the city continued to enjoy steady growth. It has also received a number of awards and recognition over the years. The New York Times named Fountain as America’s Millennium City in 1999. The National Civic League chose Fountain as an All-America City in 2002.
