Manitou Springs is a municipality that’s found in the western section of El Paso County. With a location at the foot of Pike’s Peak, the town has a rich history dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Known for the number of natural mineral springs found in the area, the town is also a destination for tourists and others. Currently, more than 5,300 people live in Manitou Springs.
While settlers can be traced back to the 1850s, the establishment of the community is generally set during the early 1870s. At that time, General William Jackson Palmer and Dr. William Abraham Bell sought to establish a scenic health resort in the area. The idea for the resort was the natural mineral springs and the perceived health benefits that the two mean felt they would provide. To that end, they officially founded Manitou Springs in 1872.
Incorporation soon followed in 1876. For a number of years, the town attracted people who believed the properties of the water would help them recover from a number of ailments. Along the way, the town gained a number of stores, churches, a school, and other types of businesses.
Today, the downtown area remains a destination for visitors, especially during the summer months. The town offers comfortable accommodations and a number of restaurants. Those seeking a permanent place to live have access to several subdivisions.
