Found at the base of the Rampart Range in El Paso County, Monument is home to more than 10,000 people. It’s considered part of the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of more than 700,000.
The first settlers of what would become Monument appeared in the 1860s. The settlement itself was designated an official stop on the Rio Grande Railroad in 1972. This led to the incorporation of a ton that was known as Henry’s Station in 1879. That name remained in place until 1882, when the town was renamed, with a nearby rock formation serving as the inspiration.
Thanks to the presence of the railroad, more people began to settle in Monument. Farming and ranching remained key to the town well into the 20th century. Today, the town draws on its rich history and supports a number of tours and sites. Events like the Monument Ice Harvest, and Arts Month in October bring people from surrounding areas to the town. The close proximity to Palmer Lake ensures residents and visitors have the chance to enjoy fishing, swimming, and other types of waters sporting activities during the summer months.
