As the seat of Valley County, Cascade is a smaller rural city that’s home to more than 900 people. Established in 1912 as a consolidation of several communities, the city reported more than 300 citizens in the 1920 US Census. Located north of Boise, the city is found along State Highway 55, which is officially designated the Payette River Scenic Highway.
Prior to 1912, the area was home to a station designed to handle freight for those who were continuing to the Pacific Coast. Transporting fish and produce was among the more popular products that made the way through the station. As more people settled in the area, the idea of creating a unified community gained in popularity. The name for this new consolidated community was drawn from the nearby Cascade Falls.
Construction of a dam in 1948 changed the landscape, including eliminating the falls that were the inspiration for the city’s name. The Cascade Reservoir continues to serve the needs of the community.
Today, the local economy is driven by a combination of ranching, logging, and farming. Tourism has grown in the area since the latter part of the 20th century, leading to ongoing improvements in recreational activities that draw on the area’s natural beauty.
