Located in Ada County, Eagle is a city of just under 20,000 people. Found just ten miles from Boise, it’s considered part of the Treasure Valley and the Boise Metropolitan Area.
As is true for many cities and towns in the area, gold fever led to the establishment of Eagle. In the latter part of 1863, Truman C. Catlin left his native Illinois and purchased 160 acres along the Boise River. His property became known as Eagle Island, owing to the large number of bald eagles found in the area. His efforts to irrigate the land spurred similar efforts among other settlers. The result is that some of the trenches dating to that era remain in use today.
The efforts of Thomas Hugh Aikens to build a bridge connecting the north and south sides of the Boise River led to more development. A school, general store, and an Odd Fellows Hall appeared within a few years of the bridge’s completion. By 1904, the growth led to the establishment of the town of Eagle.
In the early years of the 20th century, growth continued as more shops and industries entered the area. It was in 1913 that the famous Eagle Brand first appeared. During the post World War II era, Eagle gained further traction as a great place to escape the larger city and enjoy small town life without having to sacrifice any conveniences.
