Originally referred to as Emmettville, the settlement began as a post office ran by Emmett Cahalan. The post office proper was moved after a few years, but the name stuck. Eventually, it was shortened to Emmett for both the post office and the emerging settlement.
The first efforts to plat the town began in 1883. A sufficient number of people and businesses had settled in the area for the town to be officially incorporated by 1900. At the time, much of the economy relied on the presence of the mines and the logging industry.
