As a neighborhood found in Denver, Cheesman Park has a history that reaches back to the late 19th century. Plans were made to convert the old Prospect Hill Cemetery into a park. Over the next decade, the project began to take shape, resulting in the establishment of Cheesman Park by 1907.
While the project originally operated under another name, it was ultimately named to honor Denver resident and pioneer Walker Cheesman. The family had made significant contributions to the project, including supplying the funding for the construction of a neoclassical pavilion located on the east side of the park. That donation took place shortly after Cheesman’s death.
Renovations during the 1970s updated the park, but also removed a number of original elements. In the early 21st century, plans were undertaken to restore the park using the original 1902 plans as guides.
Today, Cheesman Park is the site of a number of gatherings, including annual Pride events, and AIDS walk, and a number of open air concerts during various holiday celebrations.
