Found in Arapahoe County, the City of Englewood is currently home to more than 33,600 residents. Located south of Denver, the city is considered to be a suburb. The location in the South Platte River Valley has led to Englewood being a favorite for newcomers to the area.
Englewood’s beginnings can be traced back to the gold rush of 1858. One of the early settlers in the area, Thomas Skerritt, is credited with establishing what would become Englewood. Initially, the name for the area was Orchard Place. Skerritt himself plowed and laid out the first road connecting Orchard Place to Denver.
Incorporation as a city took place in 1903. In short order, the first newspaper was established, roads were paved, and streetlights were installed. By 1906, the first fire and police departments were created.
Beginning in the 1960s, a network of local parks began development. This was after the old city park was sold to make way for what would be one of the largest shopping malls in the world. After the demise of the mall in the 1990s, the structure was demolished and a new facility housing a civic center, library, and a new city hall was built on the property.
