Found in Travis County, Bee Cave is a city that is home to more than 9,000 residents. Dietrich Bohls is credited with settling the area in the early 1850s. The name comes from the presence of a large hive of Mexican honeybees that were found in a cave near the original settlement.
Bee Cave remained a small community throughout the 19th century. During the 1870s and through 1900, a post office was established. The area also gained a general store, a grist mill, and a cotton gin. A church and school also followed. While the population dipped as low as ten during this period, Bee Cave had rebounded to 54 residents by 1914.
It would be 1987 before Bee Cave was incorporated. At that point, it had maintained a population that was similar to that of 1914. After the incorporation, growth increased. By 2000, it was home to more than 650 people.
Today, Bee Cave has a public library, schools, a number of small businesses, including a selection of restaurants. Parks and recreational facilities are found throughout the city, serving both the residents and those living in the Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction that surrounds Bee Cave.
