Located in Travis County, Barton Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) that’s home to ore than 3,000 people. William Barton first settled in the area in 1837, and is the namesake for the local creek. The name came to be associated with the community in general. Thanks to the natural beauty of the location, it was being referred to as Austin’s Eden by the 1880s.
As more people moved into the area, it remained a spot for swimming, canoeing, and other types of outdoor activities. The original swimming hole was expanded into a swimming pool in the 1930s. As further development in the latter part of the 20th century threatened to consume some of the more desirable nature spots, steps were taken to pass ordinances that limited where structures could be erected. The result is that Barton Creek has been able to maintain it’s look and feel of a semi-rural community.
