Located in Travis County, Lakeway is a city that currently has a population in excess of 19,000. The location next to Lake Travis makes it a favorite for those who enjoy swimming, skiing, and other forms of water sports. That location also makes Lakeway part of the Greater Austin Area.
What is now Lakeway is built on the former ranch of Jack Josey. In 1962, G. Flint Sawtelle, John H. Crooker, Jr., and Lee Blocker obtained an option to purchase the property. The plan was to develop it into a resort that included a hotel and other features. The name for the project was inspired by the fact that the property provided a view of Lake Travis.
The hotel and resort opened in 1963, and more people moved into the area. In 1974, the residents voted to incorporate to establish the village of Lakeway. The village was later restructured into a city.
Along with resort facilities and access to the lake, the city has a public library, an up to date medical center, and a number of locally owned businesses. Restaurants in Lakeway vary from family style eateries to high end dining clubs.
