Found in the southwestern corner of Montgomery County, Magnolia is home to more than 2,300 people. As part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area, Magnolia draws its name from the proliferation of magnolia trees that are common in the area. Originally known as Mink Prairie, the city has a history that goes back to 1845.
The inspiration for the original name came from an early settle with the last name of Mink, who established a homestead. By 1850, the area was known simply as Mink. Migration after the Civil War brought more people into the area. The establishment of a line operated by the International-Great Northern Railroad just north of Mink in 1902 helped the town to continue growing, although the center of population shifted closer to the railroad line.
For a time, the area was known as Milton. This caused some confusion with another community of the same name, leading to the adoption of the name of Magnolia for the now-shifted community and its new location.
Today, students are educated in the Magnolia Independent School District, with higher education available through the Lone Star College System. Residents enjoy the small town atmosphere, while being within easy driving distances to larger city amenities.
