With more than 62,500 residents, Spring is considered part of the Houston-Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan district. The census-designated place encompasses the town of Old Spring. The community’s beginnings can be traced back to 1836.
At that time, the Texas General Council of the Provisional Government determined that the existing town of Spring would be part of the Harrisburg municipality. The town grew steadily through the post-Civil War era, with growth accelerating after the International and Great Northern Railroad ran a line through town in 1871. A post office soon followed, along with more businesses, churches, and people. The growth continued until 1923, when the railroad relocated the roundhouse found in Spring to Houston. What had been a growing town of 1,200 was down to 300 in 1931.
Today, Spring is a prosperous suburb that’s home to shopping, historical sites, and a thriving tourist trade. The area is served by the Lone Star College System, as well as the Harris County public library system. Plans for Exxon-Mobile to build a large facility in the area were announced in 2010, with a completion date of 2022. At that time, a number of employees would shift from various locations to work in the new central facility.
