Also known as Houston Heights, The Heights is a community that’s found in the northwest-central part of Houston. With beginnings in the late 19th century, the area was already somewhat developed when the property was purchased by the Omaha and South Texas Land Company in 1891.
At the time of the purchase, what would become known as The Heights already had a streetcar route, planned streets, alleys, and schools. Utilities were also available in the area. With the aid of the new owners, the area attracted greater attention from Houston residents who preferred to live outside the city center while still having easy access to the city itself.
By 1896, The Heights was established as its own municipality. In 1919, Houston annexed The Heights, with the support of the residents.
As with other older neighborhoods, The Heights went through periods of decline before gentrification began in the latter part of the 20th century. Today, it’s viewed as a casual but upscale area for young professionals. Many older homes have been restored and renovated, while others were demolished to make way for more contemporary residences.
