Rice Military is a neighborhood found in Houston. The history of the neighborhood dates back to Camp Logan, a military facility that dates back to the time of World War I. After the conclusion of the war, the camp was converted into Memorial Park in honor of those who had lost their lives. The name was derived from the Rice family, who had owned the property and who were also responsible for establishing Rice University.
The plans for Rice Military were to include affordable housing for those who had returned from the war. To that end, the neighborhood was platted for bungalows and similar types of housing. Locally owned shops were located within walking distance, giving the area a small-town feel in the midst of a growing city.
During the 1990s, the makeup of the neighborhood began to shift. An influx of young professionals led to renovated and new homes, an increase in shops and entertainment venues, and land prices that were much different than the blue-collar prices that were intended during the early 20th century.
