Located in Harris County, Texas, Tomball is currently home to more than 12,300 residents. First settled in the early 19th century, the community attracted a number of settlers who found the climate and land ideal for farming and raising cattle. Later in the century, it was identified as an excellent spot for placing a stop on the railroad. By 1906, that stop had become a reality.
The earliest known name for the community was Peck, after an engineer on the railroad line. That also changed in the early 20th century with the advent of the railroad stop. Thomas Henry Ball, at the time a lawyer representing the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railroad, was instrumental in running the line through the downtown area. In response, the citizens chose to rename the community Tom Ball. Within several years, the two words were combined into one.
Incorporation followed in 1933. The incorporation prevented the area from being being included in the city limits of Houston. Along with a school system residents can enjoy higher learning activities at Lone Star College. David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport, a general aviation airport, is found just outside the city limits. The 375-bed Tomball Regional Medical Center provides medical care to the population.
