With just over 10,000 residents, the Town of Berthoud has portions in both Larimer and Weld counties. Identified as a statutory town, Berthoud is found south of Fort Collins and north of Denver. As is true for many towns and unincorporated areas in Colorado, the first settlers in what is now Berthoud can be traced back to the Colorado Gold Rush of the middle 19th century.
During this time, many homesteads were established but ultimately abandoned as the Gold Rush failed. Lewis Cross is credited with maintaining the homestead that ultimately gave right of way for the Colorado Central Railroad to run through the area. This led to the settlement of Little Thompson ultimately adopting the name of Berthoud, in honor of the surveyor who planned the railroad route.
Originally found along the river, the railroad company convinced the settlement to relocate on a bluff located about a mile from the river. In 1883-1884, the majority of buildings were mounted on wheels and transported to what’s the current site for the town.
Berthoud boasts the presence of ten parks, many of which are fully developed. They offer sports and recreation opportunities that include skating, baseball, soccer, outdoor basketball, sand volleyball, and swimming. Recreational activities for people of all ages are offered during most times of the year.
