Located in Weld and Boulder Counties, Erie is a statutory town that’s home to more than 30,000 residents. Found just west of I-25, it’s also easily accessible to I-70 and the Denver International Airport. The town is also less than a half-hour drive to Boulder.
First named and settled in 1867, Erie would not officially incorporate until 1874. The town was somewhat different from other mining towns in the area, in that many of the miners owned homes in the town proper rather than living and working in the nearby mining camps.
The discovery of coal and the establishment of railroad routes did a lot to attract more people to the town. This led to the first permanent school building in 1881, and an influx of commerce to serve the growing population.
As one of the few wet towns in the area, Erie was home to more than eleven saloons by 1895. Coal continued to be a major source of employment until after World War II. As coal demand declined and the mines closed, the town worked to diversify the local economy.
Today, the city boasts an airport and a thriving art community. More than 70 artists participate in the Arts Coalition, while the Arts Center of Erie offers classes and exhibits throughout the year.
