Founded in 1853, Kirkwood is a suburb of St. Louis and is currently home to more than 27,000 residents. The city is named after James P. Kirkwood, who was instrumental in constructing the Pacific Railroad line through the area. Kirkwood holds the distinction of being the first planned suburb west of the Mississippi River.
Platting for the city got underway in 1852. This included allowing for the planned railroad access that was being coordinated with James P. Kirkwood. Lots were offered for sale once the line opened, with a number of St. Louis residents who wanted to live outside the city choosing to purchase them. During this period, the deed restrictions that were in place ensured that none of the land would be bought and used for commercial purposes.
Kirkwood offers a number of cultural and historical points of interest. The 1893 train station is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Greentree Festival is an annual event held in September, and provides a space for arts and crafts, foods from various cultures, and includes a parade. The Kirkwood Farmer’s Market operates most of the year, offering fresh produce and a number of other food items.
