Facts about Brentwood, Missouri

Located in St. Louis County, Brentwood is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis. With a population of more than 8,000, the city came about as the result of three land purchases. The first of these acquisitions took place in 1804.

Brentwood’s development got underway in earnest with the arrival of Thomas Madden in the 1870s. The local businessman operated a rock quarry that supplied jobs. He also established a tavern, barber shop, blacksmith shop, and a grocery store. The community adopted the name of Maddenville in recognition of his efforts.

The final steps to become Brentwood came about in 1919. In an effort to prevent annexation, the citizens voted to incorporate as a village. The name of Brentwood was chosen as part of the incorporation. This was followed by incorporation as a city in 1929.

While the city’s history includes a period when gambling and corruption was high, it’s now known as a family oriented suburb. Housing costs within the area are primarily in the middle class range, with some lower and upper middle income properties available.
