Found near the confluence of the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers. St. Louis is the second largest city in Missouri. With a population of more than 300,000, the city rests on what was considered as major center for First People culture. European control was first under France, but later lost to Spain. After recovering the area in 1800, the French sold the land as part of the Louisiana Purchase to the United States in 1803.
