As the county seat and the most populous municipality in Douglas County, the Town of Castle Rock is home to more than 73,000 people. The inspiration for the town’s name comes from a nearby butte that has the shape of a castle.
Originally occupied by the Arapaho and Cheyenne First Peoples, settlers began to enter the area after the passing of the Homestead Act of 1862. Rumors of gold in the area also helped to drive people to settle in the area.
One of those first homesteaders, Jeremiah Gould, would give 120 acres to the developing town in 1874. This greatly added to the ability to plat out the streets and to prepare the town for the presence of a train depot brought by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. That depot today serves as the Castle Rock Historical Museum.
