As the second largest municipality in Douglas County, Parker has gained a reputation as a commuter town found at the southernmost corner of the Denver metropolitan area. Originally established at the Pine Grove Way Station, the community continued to expand throughout the middle of the 19th century. The present name of Parker was chosen in 1882.
That same year, the Denver and New Orleans Railroad completed a line that connected Parker with Denver and Colorado Springs. To ensure that the line ran through town and not through neighboring Cherry Creek, James and George Parker sold their right-of-ways for the sum of $1.00 each.
Several historical sites are found in Parker. The Twenty Mile Post Office was restored and operates under the auspices of the Parker Area Historical Society. The Ruth Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church is found on the National Register of Historic Places. The Parker Cemetery and the Tallman-Newlin Cabin are also places of note.
